The cheetah's awesome looks and reputation are fuelling the newest threat to its survival: illegal trade. Demand for cheetahs as pets (particularly in the Arabian Gulf) means cubs are often taken from the wild. Just one in six cubs are thought to survive trafficking. There is hope, however: at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in 2016, 180 countries backed measures ZSL had called for to clamp down on the trade - from strengthening law enforcement to tackling the sale of cheetahs on social media platforms.

Cats do not always adapt to change very quickly. Some cats may be immediately comfortable traveling in your RV with you, but most will need a period of time to adjust. Scientists can study cats' whiskers to learn about things like diet. In one study, researchers analyzed stable isotope ratios in the whiskers in order to identify how much protein was being consumed from either wild or provisioned foods. The findings revealed that among the cats studied, 96% of protein came from pet food, while 4% came from wild prey. "Domestic cats rely almost exclusively on food provided by people, even when they frequently kill wild animals," the researchers concluded. The secrets that whiskers can tell!
Plucky Sarah was abandoned by her previous owners in 2002, but she came across the hall to live with the Fords. Mrs. Ford once ran over her with her car, but the vet put the cat back together again.
